What Are the Processes for Extracting Corn Germ Oil?

Technology News 2025-02-13 16:40:02

The process of corn oil usually includes the following steps: pressing, solvent extraction, refining, and packaging.

The detailed corn oil production process:

Raw Material Preparation:

The main raw material for corn oil is corn germ (a part of the corn seed), which is usually extracted from corn kernels. The corn kernels first need to be dehulled, peeled, and impurities removed.

Pressing:

Physical Pressing: The treated corn germ is pressed to separate the corn oil. This is the most basic extraction method, but it usually only extracts a portion of the oil (about 15%-20%) from the corn germ, with the remaining oil still present in the corn germ. Hot Pressing:

To improve oil extraction efficiency, the corn germ may be heated to help release the oil from the cells.

Solvent Extraction:

Solvent Extraction Method: To further extract the oil from the corn germ, the solvent extraction method is commonly used, typically employing hexane (a petroleum solvent) as the solvent. After mixing the solvent with the oil in the corn germ, through soaking and stirring, the solvent extracts the oil from the germ. Oil Separation: After solvent extraction, the oil and solvent form a mixture, which is then separated through evaporation or distillation to obtain pure corn oil.

Refining:

The extracted corn oil usually needs to go through a series of refining processes to remove impurities, improve oil quality, and extend shelf life.

The refining process typically includes the following steps: Degumming: Removes phospholipids and gums from the oil, usually using water washing or acid washing methods. Deacidification: Removes free fatty acids from the oil to improve stability and taste. Decolorization: Uses activated carbon or other materials to remove pigments from the oil, making it clearer. Deodorization: Uses steam treatment to remove odors from the oil, making it fresher.

Packaging:

The refined corn oil is then packaged, usually in glass bottles, plastic bottles, or metal cans, to ensure the oil's freshness and hygiene.

The process of refining corn oil includes raw material preparation, pressing, solvent extraction, refining, and final packaging. Through these steps, high-quality corn oil can be extracted from corn germ for consumer use.
