Huatai's Efficient Rice Bran Oil Extraction Process

Although rice bran only accounts for 7% of the weight of rice, its oil content is as high as 18% to 20%, which is comparable to that of soybeans. If all rice bran is used for rice bran oil extraction, China can produce 1.2 to 1.3 million tons of rice bran oil annually, which can increase the country's self-sufficiency rate of edible oil by 4%.

Rice bran oil, as a high value-added product, has unique health properties. Numerous studies have shown that rice bran oil, due to its high concentration of gamma-oryzanol and other antioxidant bioactive components, has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which have special effects in preventing hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and other diseases.

The main extraction methods of rice bran oil are pressing, solvent extraction, and green extraction technology.

The pressing method has the advantages of safety and high efficiency. The extracted rice bran oil has better nutritional properties and no chemical residue, making it popular among consumers. However, pressing leaves 8% to 14% of usable oil in the rice bran meal, resulting in a waste of oil resources.

The use of chemical solvents to recover the residual rice bran oil from pre-pressed rice bran can achieve a higher oil extraction rate. In general industrial oil extraction, n-hexane is the preferred solvent. It has good solubility and a high solvent recovery rate, but the use of chemical solvents can lead to poorer oil color and certain environmental pollution issues.

In the past few decades, the oil industry has seen the emergence of sustainable and more efficient extraction methods. These methods have evolved from traditional pressing and solvent extraction to green extraction technologies such as Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE), Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE), and Enzyme-Assisted Aqueous Extraction (EAAE).
